Measuring The Horse
Rugs are measured along the bottom hem. The horse's measurements should be taken from the centre of the chest, round to the hind quarters directly below the top of the tail; allowing for the natural fall of the rug as it hangs on the horse. Rugs with tail flaps may need to be slightly longer.
Choosing A Rug
Having a choice of rugs in different weights will allow for variations in climate; it can be as distressing for a horse to be sweating under a thick rug, as it is for a horse to have too little protection from the cold.
Fitting
Fit rugs in clean conditions and on a clean horse - using a thin sheet under the rug will keep it clean and hair-free in case it needs to be exchanged. The rug must fit correctly before leaving the horse unattended. Too small and the rug will rub and pull across the shoulders, too big and the rug can slip or be trodden on. Similarly, the horse's legs can become tangled in leg straps and surcingles that are too long.
Performance
For safety reasons, rugs are not made to withstand extreme pressure. Hence, fabric will rip on sharp protrusions and tear when trodden on or if legs become tangled in the strapping. Because of the horse's build and the lay of its coat, a rug will always slip back, so ensure that the fit allows good freedom at the shoulder and that tucks sit correctly on the quarters. Rugs must be removed at least once daily, taking time to massage or groom the horse before replacing the rug; articularly potential pressure points at the shoulder and withers.
Maintenance & Repairs
Regular cleaning is advisable for all horse wear and reproofing with an appropriate product is recommended to maintain performance levels of waterproof rugs.
